Is it safe to download files from a shared link?

A link from a stranger can carry more than photos. Here’s what to check, and what a Room does for you.

In short
  • Photos and videos can’t run anything.
  • Archives, programs and documents can.
  • In a Room, those are scanned and infected files blocked.
STEP 1

Know which files can hurt

A photo or a video is just a picture. Archives like .zip, programs like .exe, and documents like PDF or Word files can carry something that runs.

STEP 2

Let the scan do its job

When someone uploads one of those to a Room, it is checked for viruses. A file with a virus is blocked and shows “Blocked: virus found” instead of a download.

STEP 3

Still use common sense

A program from someone you don’t know is a risk even when it’s clean. If you didn’t expect a file, ask the person before you open it.

Questions

Are photos scanned for viruses?

No. Photos and videos can’t run code, so they are not sent to the scanner.

What happens to an infected file?

It is blocked. Nobody can download it from the Room.

Is a scanned file 100% safe?

A scan catches known viruses. For programs from people you don’t know, be careful anyway.
