How to share 4K videos without losing quality

Chat apps turn a sharp 4K clip into a blurry one. Here’s how to send it so it arrives exactly as you filmed it.

In short
  • Chat apps compress video to save space and data.
  • Send the file itself through a link instead.
  • A Room keeps 4K and HDR clips exactly as filmed.
STEP 1

Know where the quality goes

WhatsApp, Messenger and most chats re-encode video into a smaller file. A 4K clip often arrives at a much lower resolution, with blocky shadows and washed-out colours.

STEP 2

Upload the original file

Pick the clip from the phone gallery or drag it from the computer into a Room. Large videos upload in pieces and continue if the connection drops.

STEP 3

Share one link

Send the link wherever you like, even in the same chat. The people who open it play or download the original file, not a copy.

Questions

Does WhatsApp HD keep 4K?

No. The HD option sends a better copy than the default, but it is still compressed and not the original 4K file.

Is there a length limit?

There is no limit on minutes. What counts is the file size and the space on your plan, which starts at 10 GB for free.

Can people watch before downloading?

Yes. Videos play right in the Room, and anyone allowed can download the original file.
