Why Telegram photos look worse, and how to send the originals

Telegram shrinks photos you send the normal way. Here’s what changes, and how to share full-quality files with a group.

In short
  • Normal Telegram photos are compressed.
  • Send as file keeps the original, without a preview.
  • A Room keeps originals and shows a gallery.
STEP 1

What Telegram does to a photo

When you send a photo the normal way, Telegram makes it smaller so it travels fast. It looks fine on a phone screen, but zoom in or print it and the detail is gone.

STEP 2

The send-as-file trick

Telegram can send a photo as a file instead, which keeps the original. The chat then shows a list of file names instead of pictures, which is hard to browse with many photos.

STEP 3

Share the group’s photos in one Room

Put the link in the Telegram group. Everyone adds their photos in full quality and sees them as a gallery, then downloads the originals.

Questions

Does Telegram keep my photo’s location and date?

A compressed photo can lose some of its details. A file sent as a document, or uploaded to a Room, stays as it was.

Is sending as a file always better?

It keeps the quality, but the other person has to open each file. For a lot of photos, a gallery is easier.

Can people without Telegram see the Room?

Yes. The link opens in any browser, on any phone or computer.
