HEIC vs JPG: why iPhone photos won’t open everywhere, and what to do

Just Send Files ·

You send someone your holiday photos and they reply: “I can’t open these.” The files end in .HEIC, their computer shows a blank icon, and a website refuses the upload. Nothing is broken. It is a format question, and it has simple answers.

What HEIC is

HEIC (short for High Efficiency Image Container, part of the HEIF standard) is the format iPhones use for photos by default. It stores a photo at roughly the same visible quality as JPG in a noticeably smaller file, which saves space on your phone and in your cloud. It can also hold extra detail, such as wider colour, depth for portrait mode and Live Photo data.

Why it does not open everywhere

JPG has been around for decades and opens on practically everything. HEIC is newer, and support is uneven:

  • Many Windows computers need extra extensions from the Microsoft Store before they can show HEIC photos.
  • Some websites, online forms and printing services only accept JPG or PNG.
  • Some photo editors and older Android phones cannot read it.

Apple devices handle HEIC without any fuss, which is why the problem often appears only once the photos leave your iPhone.

Do you actually need JPG?

Often not. When you share from an iPhone, iOS may convert photos to JPG for you, for example when you attach them to an email or pick them in some browser upload forms. You only need to act when someone receives the .HEIC files themselves and cannot open them.

Three ways to get JPG

1. Change the iPhone camera format

Go to Settings, Camera, Formats, and choose Most Compatible. From then on, new photos are saved as JPG (and videos as H.264). The files are larger, and existing photos do not change.

2. Convert on a computer

On a Mac, open the photo in Preview and use Export to save it as JPEG; you can select several photos and export them together. On Windows, install the HEIF Image Extensions and, if Photos asks for it, the HEVC Video Extensions (a small paid add-on) from the Microsoft Store, then open the photo in Photos and save a copy as JPG.

3. Export from the Photos app

Copying photos from the iPhone Photos app and pasting them into the Files app, or into many other apps, often produces JPG copies. Results vary by iOS version and app, so check the file type afterwards.

Sharing photos so everyone can see them

If you share a group’s photos in a JustSendFiles Room, nobody has to think about formats. Everyone sees a preview of each photo in the browser, HEIC included, on iPhone, Android or Windows. The download is still the original file, never compressed or converted, so the person who wants the HEIC gets the HEIC, and the full quality and date inside it stay intact.

FAQ

What is a HEIC file?
HEIC is the image format iPhones use by default. It keeps the same visible quality as JPG in a smaller file, but not every computer, program or website can open it.
Is HEIC better quality than JPG?
At the same file size, HEIC usually looks better, and it can store more colour detail. In everyday use the difference is small; the main practical difference is compatibility.
How do I make my iPhone take JPG instead?
In Settings, go to Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. New photos are then saved as JPG. Existing photos stay as they are.
How do I convert HEIC to JPG on a computer?
On a Mac, open the photo in Preview and export it as JPEG. On Windows, the Photos app can open HEIC once the HEIF Image Extensions (and, if it asks, the HEVC Video Extensions) are installed from the Microsoft Store, and can save a copy as JPG.
Can people see my HEIC photos in a Room?
Yes. A Room shows a preview of HEIC photos in the browser for everyone, and keeps the original HEIC file for download, unchanged.
