How to send large videos from an iPhone without losing quality
Just Send Files ·
An iPhone records beautiful video, often in 4K, and a few minutes of it can be several gigabytes. Then you try to send it. iMessage shrinks it, WhatsApp shrinks it more, a normal email attachment bounces, and the person on the other end sees a soft, blocky version of what you filmed. Here is what each option does, and how to send the original file in full quality.
What the usual options do
- iMessage: between iPhones it sends large videos, but they are usually compressed on the way. To someone without an iPhone, quality drops much further.
- WhatsApp and other messengers: compress video by default and have a size limit for media. Sending as a document keeps more quality but also has a limit. See why WhatsApp lowers quality.
- Email: normal attachments are limited to a few tens of megabytes, which is seconds of 4K video. Apple Mail can send up to 5 GB with Mail Drop, as an iCloud link that expires after 30 days.
- AirDrop: sends the original, fast, but only to someone nearby, and mostly to Apple devices.
- iCloud links: can share the full file, but depend on your iCloud storage and settings.
Send a link to the original
The reliable way for anyone, anywhere: upload the video once and send a link. The message carries only the link; the recipient downloads the actual file when they are ready, on Wi-Fi if they like.
- Open justsendfiles.com in Safari and add your video.
- Sign in with Google or an email code. The upload carries on while you review.
- Copy the link and paste it into iMessage, WhatsApp or email.
Just Send Files never compresses, resizes or converts files. What you upload is exactly what they download, including the resolution, frame rate and the date it was recorded.
Tips for very large videos
- Use Wi-Fi. A 4K video is large; a stable connection makes the upload quicker and saves your mobile data.
- Keep the screen on until the upload finishes, especially for the first few minutes.
- Want the exact original? When you choose a video from the Photos library in a browser, iOS may prepare a converted copy. Save it to the Files app first and select it from there to send the file untouched.
- Several videos? Add them all at once. The recipient can download one, or everything as a single ZIP.
Collecting videos from others
The same link can work the other way round. Switch on uploads in the Room’s Settings and friends can add their own videos from a wedding, a trip or a party, straight from their phone browser, in original quality.
FAQ
- Why does my iPhone video look blurry when I send it?
- Most messaging apps compress video before sending, so it travels quickly over mobile data. The person receiving it gets a smaller file with lower resolution than the one on your phone.
- What is the best way to send a long iPhone video?
- Send a link to the original file instead of the file itself. Upload the video once, then share the link in any message; the recipient downloads the full-quality original.
- Can I use AirDrop?
- Yes, if the other person is next to you, usually with an Apple device. AirDrop sends the original. For anyone far away or on Android, a link works better.
- Why does my iPhone say “preparing” or “compressing” before uploading?
- When you pick a video from the Photos library in a browser, iOS may prepare or convert a copy first. To send the exact original, save it to the Files app and choose it from there.
- Does the recipient need an account to download?
- Not with Just Send Files. They open the link and download the video, on any phone or computer.
